In November, the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) hosted the Accessibility & Inclusion Equity Summit, featuring four panels that addressed barriers and proposed paths toward greater accessibility and inclusion within the postdoctoral community.

The sessions introduced key concepts and terminology related to neurodiversity, emphasizing the importance of understanding diverse lived experiences and the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals. Institutions, postdocs, and their support networks must prioritize accessibility, inclusivity, and equity to create environments where neurodivergent individuals can thrive.

Postdocs with disabilities often encounter obstacles and inequities in both academic and professional environments. The summit highlighted the urgent need for actionable strategies to reimagine disability access in academia and related fields. The discussions explored institutional and cultural misconceptions about disabilities and identified strategies for colleagues, mentors, department chairs, institutional leaders, and individuals with disabilities to foster advocacy and success.

To promote cultural and institutional change, the summit recommended:
  • Educating institutional communities, particularly leadership, about disability and inclusion
  • Encouraging leaders to create safe spaces where disability is seen as an asset rather than a limitation.
  • Providing resources to navigate disability accommodations, integrated into hiring processes.
  • Offering mentorship and training on accessibility resources.
  • Committing to ongoing funding and resources to enhance accessibility throughout the research ecosystem.
  • Reducing stigma surrounding disability disclosure.
Recorded sessions from the NPA’s 2024 Accessibility & Inclusion Equity Summit are available for viewing.
