FASEB Urges Removal of Restrictions on Federal Grants and Awards
Wednesday, January 29, 2025The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) is dismayed by actions of the new Administration that negatively impact not only the biological and biomedical research community, but also the Nation it serves. The Memorandum for Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies (M-25-13) issued on January 27 by the White House Office of Management and Budget to pause payment of federal grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs is unprecedented. If enacted, this directive threatens existing investments in life-saving research, the development of the next generation of researchers, and the health of the Nation.
FASEB, while pursuing its own efforts urging the Administration to allow agencies to release funds previously approved by Congress, encourages members of the scientific community to make Members of Congress aware of the consequences the freeze of federal grants and awards will have on their constituents. FASEB advocacy resources, namely its Federal Funding Factsheets, allow researchers to supplement personal stories with data detailing the direct financial impacts of funding for NIH, NSF, and other agencies on a particular state or Congressional district. Now is the time for researchers to make their voices heard. The future of the Nation’s research enterprise depends on it.
