FASEB Submits Letter to Senate on Importance of Nonhuman Primate Research

Wednesday, June 19, 2019

On June 19, FASEB submitted a letter to the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) Appropriations Subcommittee urging Senators to refrain from including language that would significantly restrict the National Institutes of Health’s intramural nonhuman primate research program. Such language was included in the FY2020 House LHHS Appropriations report approved last month.

In its letter, FASEB reiterated the essential contribution of animals to biomedical research, and specifically highlighted how nonhuman primates remain the best model for studying various disorders and scientific disciplines, including infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, reproductive biology, and neuroscience.
