On December 4-5, the National Science Board (NSB) convened to discuss the future of the U.S. science and technology (S&T) enterprise. NSB members addressed various science policy issues through three panel discussions on the Vision for American S&T (VAST) task force policy ideas, followed by a panel on potential elements for a follow-up to the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958. Another panel explored ideas for NSF’s multi-sector partnerships and investments.

The VAST task force aims to provide U.S. decision-makers with a roadmap to maintain global competitiveness in S&T. The task force presented three preliminary recommendations. The first was to leverage U.S. strengths by reducing inefficiencies, removing barriers to progress, and fostering collaboration across academia, industry, philanthropy, and the private sector. The second recommendation was to build and empower an adaptable workforce to benefit the American people and sustain S&T innovation. The last recommendation was to target investments in critical infrastructure to optimize resource utilization, develop a world-leading scientific workforce, and ensure access to cutting-edge equipment.

The task force also suggested strategic actions, including empowering local leaders and optimizing tax codes for competitiveness. The board discussed funding regionally focused technology programs and innovation centers through public-private partnerships to increase efficiency. There was also a strong emphasis on strengthening policies to attract and retain global talent, ensuring the U.S. remains a top destination for scientific and technical innovators.
