FASEB Fellows for the Future
Piotr Jung, PhD
Piotr Jung is a postdoctoral fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he works in the laboratory of Adam Wolpaw, PhD—his research centers on pediatric cancer, with a particular focus on neuroblastoma. Using advanced 3D culture technologies, Jung studies tumor antigen heterogeneity and metastasis-related pathways to uncover insights that could lead to improved therapies for childhood cancers. His work holds significant potential for understanding how neuroblastoma cells metastasize and how antigen expression, such as GD2, impacts treatment strategies.
Jung earned his doctorate from the University of Cambridge, England, where he explored the PI3K signaling pathway in prostate cancer progression, focusing on the understudied protein PLEKHS1. During his time at Cambridge, Jung took on a leadership role within the doctorate student community, chairing the doctorate student committee and organizing the student conference Symposium on Biological Life Sciences (SymBLS). He ensured that the conference fostered diversity by selecting speakers from various academic backgrounds and emphasizing a balanced representation of genders.
A champion of inclusivity, Jung spearheaded the “Diversity in Science” panel at SymBLS, aiming to create an environment where individuals of all nationalities, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and religious backgrounds could feel welcomed. He invited speakers from various backgrounds to reflect on the diversity in science and highlight the importance of representation in the field.
Before his doctoral studies, Jung earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in molecular biology from the University of Warsaw, Poland. He remains dedicated to advancing pediatric cancer research while promoting an inclusive scientific community.
