New FASEB Tools Turns Constituent Concerns Into Action

Building on the success of an advocacy tool that reached 1,600 users in just two weeks, FASEB has launched a new resource designed to help the biological and biomedical research community make its voice heard on Capitol Hill. 

In July, FASEB developed an online tool to help scientists understand and submit comments to a proposed Office of Management and Budget (OMB) rule affecting federal grant guidance. Rather than leaving supporters to navigate a complex process and document alone, the tool walked users through a few short questions and generated a personalized, draft that users downloaded, edited and approved, before submitting to the federal docket. Over a two-week period, 16,000 users engaged with the tool, educating the community about what was at stake and lowering the barrier to meaningful participation. This tool simplified the process for the community and resulted in substantive public comments from voices that might otherwise have stayed on the sidelines. 

Now FASEB is applying the same proven model to congressional engagement. The new tool works exactly the same: users answer a few brief questions about how the issue affects them, their institution, or their research, and the tool produces a draft message tailored based on their input – and this new tool is designed to fit in the most restrictive character limits of congressional comment boxes. Users can review and edit the draft, then paste it directly into the congressional comment box on FASEB's website. Once they enter their zip code, their comment is on the way in a few short minutes to all three congressional members- no prior advocacy experience required. 

For practicing scientists, the appeal is straightforward. The tool converts known concerns and positions the federation has heard from its’ constituents into concrete outreach at scale, while keeping each message authentic and personalized. It meets constituents where they are, removes friction, and channels engagement toward the members of Congress who most need to hear from the research community.
