FASEB Charts Course for Responsible AI Use in Biological and Biomedical Research

Friday, January 24, 2025

FASEB has released comprehensive recommendations for responsibly integrating generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) into biological and biomedical research, marking a pivotal moment in the field’s evolution. The report, developed by FASEB’s Gen AI Task Force over eight months, provides crucial guidance for all stakeholders in the sciences.

“As biological and biomedical research enters the generative AI era, we must ensure these powerful tools enhance rather than compromise scientific integrity,” said Robin Lorenz, MD, PhD, Chair of FASEB’s Generative AI Task Force. “Our recommendations provide a comprehensive roadmap for the research community to harness AI’s potential while addressing critical challenges in data security, equity, and research reproducibility. By bringing together diverse perspectives from across the scientific ecosystem, we’ve created practical guidelines that will help shape the responsible integration of AI tools into the research enterprise.”

The Task Force, authorized by FASEB’s Board of Directors in 2024, engaged with researchers spanning the breadth of the biological and biomedical sciences and at various career stages, scholarly societies, ethicists, policy makers, and AI experts to develop actionable recommendations across five critical areas:

  • Policy and regulatory frameworks
  • Scientific integrity and intellectual property protection
  • Data privacy and security measures
  • Equity in access and implementation
  • Workforce development and training

The report specifically targets five key stakeholder groups: U.S. federal agencies, policy makers, institutions (research, education, and corporate), scholarly societies, and individual researchers. It emphasizes the need for coordinated action to maintain research integrity and sensitive information while leveraging these powerful new tools.

FASEB’s recommendations arrive at a crucial time when scientific researchers are increasingly incorporating Gen AI into their work, highlighting the urgent need for a thoughtful framework and awareness of crucial issues and opportunities.
