The Shared Research Resources Subcommittee is an ad hoc subcommittee charged with directing FASEB’s efforts related to shared instrumentation, core facilities, and other resources that can be jointly utilized by research groups. In its Sustaining Discovery discussion framework, FASEB called for enhanced deployment and use of shared resources to extend the value of funding and provide greater access to new technologies and costly instruments. This Subcommittee will evaluate the shared resource landscape, identify current barriers, and explore strategies to promote greater support for and utilization of shared resources. Specific subcommittee activities may include, but are not limited to: 1) assessing available funding mechanisms; 2) developing best practices and supporting materials; 3) initiating a survey or other data collection effort; and 4) responding to relevant policy actions.
Through a survey of users and providers of shared research resources, FASEB documented their many benefits and identified four key areas for improvement. This report details survey findings and offers recommendations on how the research community can leverage shared research resources to bolster biomedical research capacity.
This report provides an overview of US federal grants and programs that provide investigators access to critical instrumentation. Funding mechanisms include shared equipment and technology development awards as well as support for core and national facilities.
FASEB affirms the importance of properly acknowledging shared resource facilities, including core facilities, national laboratories, stock centers, and shared instrumentation, in scientific communications. This simple act helps demonstrate the value of these resources and is important to ensuring their continued funding and development.
