Lipid Droplets on the Move from Health to Disease

Conference Summary

This FASEB SRC will attract an international group of trainees, early investigators, and established researchers from a broad range of disciplines, all of whom share interest in lipid droplets in health and disease. The goal is to facilitate the sharing of the most up-to-date research findings and insights and to catalyze the continued growth of lipid droplet studies. Lipid droplets are dynamic cellular organelles that are increasingly recognized as important in many fields of biology. The best-known role for lipid droplets is in energy metabolism. Because obesity and associated pathologies, such as insulin resistance, diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease, are now epidemic throughout the world, research on the biology of lipid storage and metabolism is exploding. The elucidation of fundamental processes such as lipid droplet biogenesis, growth, trafficking, lipolysis, and oxidation are key for designing appropriate new therapeutic strategies. Understanding lipid droplets has broad biomedical significance, as lipid droplets are implicated increasingly in such diverse fields as immunity, microbial pathogenesis, exercise physiology, cancer metabolism, and neurodegeneration.

This conference represents the diversity of science in this field, with invited speakers from North America, Europe, Israel, and China, and will include presentations that span basic to clinical research. There will be many opportunities for junior scientists to present their work and to meet and exchange ideas with experts in the field. Fourteen short talks will be presented by trainees and early investigators chosen from submitted abstracts, and there will be four poster sessions, a “meet the experts” session on advanced imaging that is geared to junior scientists, and a career development session focused on strategies for obtaining grants and grant writing. Social and recreational activities will provide opportunities for informal interactions.

Sessions will be devoted to lipid droplet biogenesis, lipid droplets in the context of integrative biology, lipid droplet contacts with other organelles, lipophagy, the genetics of lipid droplets, advanced imaging of lipid droplets, lipid droplets and model organisms, and human physiology and disease. Attendees will gain broad exposure to most current research findings on lipid droplets and will be able to discuss their own work with interested peers and the field’s thought leaders.

This is the 6th FASEB SRC on lipid droplets. This conference has always been highly interactive and has a great tradition of presenting groundbreaking research in the lipid droplet field and sparking new scientific interactions. For this iteration, we aim to uphold these traditions and to attract an even broader audience, as researchers from other fields are flocking to lipid droplet research. This meeting continues to represent THE major international meeting dedicated to lipid droplets.
