The Big Sky area of Montana is well known as a ski resort in winter, but in the summer becomes an outdoor playground with picturesque landscapes and numerous recreational activities. On the mountain are zip lines, archery, hiking, canoeing and mountain biking. Down the mountain by Meadow Village is golf and horseback riding. Fly fishing and whitewater rafting are popular on the Gallatin River.
The Big Sky area is approximately 50 miles north of the west entrance to Yellowstone and serves as a convenient base camp for excursions into the park. The park is home to grizzly bears, wolves, eagles and herds of bison and elk. The park encompasses more than 2.2 million acres and has over 1,000 miles of hiking trails, 12 campgrounds and 2 lakes. The park also contains over 300 geysers, including the famous and predictable “Old Faithful,” which erupts every 35-120 minutes.
The average summer temperature in Big Sky is 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit (21-27 degrees Centigrade) although the temperatures can drop into the 40's in the evening. Casual clothing is suggested. We also suggest bringing a sweater or jacket for sessions, as the rooms tend to be on the cool side. The elevation is 7,510 feet above sea level. Visitors to Big Sky may need some extra time to acclimate to the higher altitude. Be sure to drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and start off with lighter activities and gradually build up to more strenuous activities. For more information on activities in Big Sky, please visit the Big Sky Chamber or Basecamp Activities.
Guest rooms are reserved for attendees at the Huntley Lodge. Guestroom accommodations include a private bath, free WiFi, high definition TV, coffee maker, refrigerator, and seating area. Rooms do not include air conditioning. Onsite amenities include a spa, fitness center, tennis courts and outdoor pool. The single or double occupancy registration fee covers 5 nights of lodging (Sunday through Thursday night, with checkout Friday morning). If you plan to arrive early or stay beyond the official conference dates, you must make your own reservations for the extra nights by contacting the lodge directly at 800-548-4486. You will be responsible for the cost of any additional room nights as well as any incidental charges (i.e. in-room movies, room service, parking, etc.). A credit card will be required upon check-in for incidental expenses.
The closest airport to the Big Sky area is the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). It is approximately one hour from the airport. Please visit the BZN

Child and Family Care Resources
FASEB provides detailed information for each conference site on the Science Research Conference (SRC) website and also provides venue information directly to each attendee. Although FASEB does not directly provide child care services, attendees are welcome to have guests (including spouses, children, nannies and babysitters) accompany them to the conference to provide such care. FASEB offers an alternative off-site registration fee at all conferences, to accommodate those with special family care needs (the off-site fee includes the conference and all meals but enables attendees to book their own accommodations). Both the FASEB and venue websites include information on nearby off-site accommodations that can assist attendees with locating licensed child care providers and daycare services. The venue management will also provide any assistance to attendees regarding child/family care issues or concerns. Each attendee is also encouraged to contact FASEB with any special needs that they may have.
Activities in Big Sky
Recreational activities on the Big Sky campus are coordinated and for purchase at a building called Basecamp. A representative from Basecamp will speak to attendees on Monday morning during the conference to discuss what is available during the summer months. For a list of activities, please visit Basecamp (make sure it is the summer website).
For any attendee interested in discussing their research for about 20-30 minutes with medical students, you may contact Dr. Jeffrey Daniels at 406-993-2797 at the Medical Clinic of Big Sky. He runs the local urgent care center/ medical clinic in the town center at the base of the mountain, and hosts a medical student and resident training program.
