On December 7, FASEB submitted a response to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Request for Information (RFI) on “Strategies for NIH Data Management, Sharing, and Citation” (NOT-OD-17-015). The comments were consistent with the FASEB Statement on Data Management and Access from March, 2016.
In its response, FASEB agreed with NIH that many factors must be considered when determining which data should be shared and recommended that the potential utility of a dataset be used as a major selection criterion. While affirming the benefits of making research data accessible, FASEB described many barriers to productive data sharing and encouraged NIH to continue its efforts to address these challenges. Integrated community-based solutions are needed to enhance data management, sharing, and citation; FASEB called upon NIH to work with researchers and other stakeholders as NIH develops and refines its strategies.
NIH has issued an extension to this RFI and will be accepting responses through January 19, 2017. Responses may be submitted electronically or via mail in a letter addressed the NIH Office of Science Policy.
