Drug discovery identifies candidate treatments for disease. A variety of different scientific fields are involved in the process. Whether identified by screening a large number of compounds for a desired effect or synthesized based on knowledge of chemical structure, many of today’s treatments are based on serendipitous exploratory research in the laboratory.
