Teresa Ramirez is a PhD Candidate at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology and Biotechnology program. She is presently working at the Liver Research Center, where her thesis research work focuses on the effects of alcohol and how it plays a role in insulin resistance, lipid accumulation and ER stress.  Ms. Ramirez received her B.S. in general biology from California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) in 2004. As an undergraduate student, Ms. Ramirez was part of the Minority Biomedical Research Support program, where she was first given the opportunity to learn about biomedical research. She also had the opportunity to participate in the Minority International Research Training summer program in England in 2001 and at the Brown University Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification program in 2002. After graduating from CSUDH, she was part of the Cancer Research Training Award post-baccalaureate program at the National Cancer Institute. Ms. Ramirez has been actively involved with the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science(SACNAS) since she was an undergraduate student. She has served as a SACNAS student board member and SACNAS chapter committee.  She started the Brown SACNAS Chapter and is currently the chapter president until the spring 2013. In September 2009, Ms. Ramirez was awarded the Student Role Model Award from the Minority Access, Inc., and received the Ford Pre-doctoral Diversity Fellowship.

 If you could choose to be an animal what animal would you choose to be? Why?

 I would be a lion because I like being a leader and being in control.

 Choose a word that best describes your life up to this moment?

 Hardworking.

 What do people like best about you? Why?

 People have told me that they like my personality and my opinion.

 Growing up, what were you favorite toys to play with as a child?

 My favorite toys to play were dolls and Barbie dolls.

 If you had to describe yourself using three words, what three would they be?

 Optimistic.  Determined.  Adventurous.

 What was the first car you drove?

 1986 Chevrolet Caprice.

 Both! 

 If you were a color. what color would you be? Why?

 If I were a color, I would be a Peridont color (light green) because that is my birthstone.

 If you had one free day to do anything you want, what would you do?

 I would love to go fishing because I have never done that.

 If you could be on Disney character, who would you be and why?
