Peer Mentor since 2008

Dr. Anthea Aikins is originally from Ghana, West Africa. She completed her Ph.D studies from the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Her research project focused on understanding the role of two cyclins in yeast (Pcl6 and Pcl7).

She was recently at the New Jersey Medical School University Hospital, working as a Post-doctoral fellow doing Clinical and Translational research at the Cancer Center in Newark, New Jersey. Her current research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of Leukemia. Specifically, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, also known as CML.

Dr. Aikins is now at Delaware State University as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Dr. Aikins is a graduate from Delaware State University. During her matriculation at Delaware State University, she was involved in the MARC program under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Fatma Helmy and the MARC Staff at Delaware State University.

“The mentorship and guidance I received from my science instructors also played an instrumental role in nurturing my interest in scientific research. Being a part of the MARC program at Delaware State University, gave me the opportunity to be involved in research during the summer times. This further enhanced my curiosity in science and stimulated my research interest."

"I am honored to have the opportunity to work as a peer mentor for FASEB MARC. This is a service that I enjoy being a part of because I recognize that I am where I am today due to great mentors who helped me along the way and still offer guidance to me”. Dr. Aikins is looking forward to this experience again and she knows this year will also be a success.

Breaking the Ice - Anthea's "Q&A"

What is the most beautiful thing about people. Why?

I really appreciate people who have the ability and the desire to sense the need in others and are willing to meet that need without being asked.  People like that are hard to find and should definitely be treasured.

On what basis do you select your friend? Why?

I look for people who are committed to telling the truth no matter what.  The truth will certainly set you free.  If you are involved in something that you can't be honest about, then most likely you shouldn't be engaged in that activity.  I appreciate people who will tell me the truth about myself even if I don't want to hear it.  Because I know that in the long run, they have my best interest at heart. I also look for people who uphold similar standards and convictions as mine, when it comes to my life and my faith in God.  Lastly, I look for people who are committed to working hard, diligent and doing their best in all that they do.

What is the greatest value that guards your life and why?

"Your attitude in life determines your altitude."  This quote revolutionized my thinking because it is very profound.  Having the right attitude will certainly take you places in and it will cause the right people to gravitate towards you.   A positive attitude, hard work, diligence and persistence are just some of the attitudes that will take you further in life.

Choose one word that best describes your life up to this moment?

 Grace.

Tell something that nobody in your group know about you.

When I was in junior high school in Ghana (West Africa,) I was an actress on a TV show ("By the Fire Side") geared toward educating young people about life, Ghanaian culture and value.

 What are you thankful for?

 Life!

 Listener or talker?

 Both!

What was the first car you drove?

 Hyundai Accent

If you really had to describe yourself, using three words, they would be?

 Meticulous. Thoughtful. Sweet.

 What is your "dream job"?

To be an educator, a minister and an inspirational speaker.
