2016 Annual Report
We began 2016 on an upbeat note, knowing that funding for biomedical research had at last received the increases we had sought for so long. In December of 2015, Congress passed an omnibus appropriations bill containing a $2 billion boost for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This marked the first time since the end of “the doubling” in 2003 that NIH received a sizeable budget increase and was the culmination of years of advocacy by FASEB and other groups. It was an affirmation of the importance of our work as scientists and as advocates. FASEB generated dozens of commentaries and letters published in local newspapers, hundreds of meetings with members of Congress and their staff, and thousands of e-mails sent to Senators and Representatives. Clearly, they had an impact.
